Destrozado pero muy interesante


Después de comprar en 1933 un terreno cercano a la localidad de Tombeek, la aseguradora La Prévoyance Sociale encargó a Maxime Brunfaut, un joven arquitecto de sólo 24 años la construcción de un sanatorio para 150 hombres.
El 30 de septiembre de 1937, apenas 13 meses después del inicio de las obras (todo un record para la época) se inauguró el edificio.
El inmueble es sencillo y funcional, claro ejemplo del estilo modernista propio de los años 30.
El nombre Joseph Lemaire se puso en homenaje al que era en aquel momento el director de la La Prévoyance Sociale.
Durante la II Guerra Mundial el hospital se puso a disposición de la Cruz Roja y se aumentó su capacidad hasta las 235 camas.
A lo largo de los años fueron variando sus usos: fue una unidad de cuidados para enfermos crónicos, un centro de neurología y terminó funcionando como una institución geriátrica.
50 años después de su inauguración, en 1987, la empresa cerró el hospital y éste fue vendido a otra sociedad, que no tardó en abandonarlo ante las numerosas dificultades de financiación.

After buying a piece of land in 1933 near the town of Tombeek, the insurance company “La Prévoyance Sociale” build a sanatorium for 150 people. The architect was, Maxime Brunfaut, a young man only 24 years old.
On September 30th, 1937, only 13 months after the start of the works(a guiness record for those years) the building was opened.
The hospital is simple and functional, clear example of the modernist style typical of the 30s.
The name Joseph Lemaire was a tribute to the director of the “La Prévoyance Sociale”.
During World War II the hospital was made available to the Red Cross and its capacity was increased to 235 beds.
Throughout the years it were changing its uses: it was a unit for care of the chronically ill, neurology center and finally it was a geriatric institution.
50 years after it opens, in 1987, the company closed the hospital and it was sold to another company, which soon left it due the many difficulties of financing.
